Art and Design
At The Nightingale Federation, we recognise that a high-quality Art and Design curriculum should stimulate creativity, imagination, inspiration and engage pupils into appreciating visual arts as well as the skills they learn. Our curriculum develops creativity by instilling knowledge and understanding of a variety of artists as well as gaining skills in experimentation and invention, the ability to critique and improve and create with confidence across a wide range of art forms and media. We feel language is an important understanding of skill and key vocabulary will be explained at the start of each topic, revised and developed as the children progress through the year groups and art topics. These include shape, line, colour, pattern, form and space Throughout their time at The Nightingale Federation, children’s cultural literacy will be developed by explicit exposure to a wide range of art styles, movements, artists and their traditions, linking closely to our value of light for growth where we respect artists’ works and individualise tactile elements found within it. and Where possible this should include actual visits to galleries or if not possible, virtual tours of an artist’s work. Children will be taught a diverse range of artists/styles from different time periods and cultures, placed into historical and geographical context. Authentic and enriching connections to other subjects will be considered and identified. Opportunities for ‘dovetailing’ of art with subjects such as (but not limited to) history, R.E, geography, writing etc should be taken so that naturally complementary areas of the curriculum are being taught concurrently. Children will have the opportunity to experience collaborative work where possible to support the movement of innovation and invention in our pieces.
